Collab

Project

Town Hearth was a project I worked on with two other students my junior year. It is a restaurant redesign which is supported by research. To the right, are a few of our elevations to better understand the space. Below, you will find some supporting information, concept statement, perspectives of the space, floor/ceiling plans, and a couple elevations.

Bar/Piano Perspective View

Town Hearth

About:

Town Hearth is a Fine dining restaurant located in Downtown Dallas where American-styled food and experiences are served. The design of the restaurant is meant to create a unique and visually pleasing experience for the guest while evoking a sense of community gathering space. It is also a part of a similar grouping of restaurants such as Neighborhood Services, National Anthem, and Desert Racers. These restaurants have a different look and feel but give a sense of American community. Hours of operation include opening

at 5pm all week, closing after 9pm. Town Hearth caters to adults as their primary clientele.

Concept Statement:

The space will emphasize sensory design theory, this means that the design will focus on and take into consideration all human senses. The world is viewed through the lens of the five senses that interact and help to give us an impression of our surroundings (Sternberg & Wilson, 2006). Textures will be utilized throughout the space to create visual interest while also making it an enjoyable experience to the touch. Acoustical panels will be implemented to decrease noise. Visual stimulation will be used to create sight stimuli and the decadent American food will engulf the patrons into the last two senses completing the experience.

Because Town Hearth focuses on the enjoyment and experience of its guests, the facility’s brightness will be lowered while having a warmer tint. Still functional, but also inviting so the visitors will feel comfortable staying a while (Mannapova, 2020).

Spacing the tables further apart will create acoustical privacy for the guests and decrease the amount of noise transferred from each table ( Lewis, 2012).

Drawing I

Project

This project was part of my drawing I class my sophomore year of college. We had to draw insects after doing a collaboration with the environmental science lab. My project got selected to hang in one of the galleries on campus.

Palettes

During college, I worked for a hospitality design firm in Houston. To the right, you will see a few of the material palettes I put together for various projects. The top two were for a high end residential client, the bottom left was a restaurant, and the bottom right was an office.

Project Design Research

ACOUSTIC DESIGN

Acoustic Design is both a focus on managing beautiful sound internally and offering the best possible protection from noise both airborne and impact whether, externally and internally.

SENSORY DESIGN

The strategic process of creating design to engage the user in a multi-level, dynamic, tailored encounter; where the brand experience triggers one or more senses, evoking an intuitive response.

FINDINGS

-Noises can affect other parties such as other businesses, inner city residents, etc.

-One of the primary noise sources in a restaurant is the customer talking and socializing.

- Factors that influence the annoyance or discomfort caused by sound are influenced by:

• Time (day or night)

• Type of sound

• Level of background sound

• Sensitivity of the recipient

• Level of sound insulation and sound control provided by the building

FINDINGS

-Restaurants consider taste and smell to be important senses, whereas hearing was considered to be the least important.

-Sensory design supports everyone’s opportunity to receive information.

-The senses are unique to every person.

-Sensory design enhances health and well-being.

-Sight is the most commonly used in humans and plays an important supporting role to the other senses.

On-site Residential Work

To the left are two different pantries for one high end residential client in Houston. This client moved homes, and each pantry utilized strategic placement and organizational problem solving. The materials chosen for these pantries were researched and made to fit the space with the use of AutoCAD.
